Last week, my friend L’s husband picked up the CSA and when we split the share over at their place, he wasn’t there to tell us what the hell this tentacled monster was (last week’s version was green).
So when I went today and saw a purple version of the beast, I made sure to find out exactly what we are dealing with. Turns out it’s a kohlrabi, which didn’t really elucidate much. But after a bit of research, I have come to understand it as a sort of cross between cabbage and, well, broccolli stems. You peel it, slice it, sprinkle it with salt and eat it raw.
Apparently there are ways to cook it as well, so I’ll be sure to try out a recipe this week and report back.
